The project of American record producer Steven Ellison, known as Flying Lotus, was a name that had been floating around in my world for what feels like many years. However, I wouldn’t properly dive in to his colorful and surreal style of hip-hop production until roughly this time 2 years ago, in which Flying Lotus released his 2019 album Flamagra.

In my mind, Flamagra offered a bit of a conundrum. While the best of what that album had to offer spoke of a project…

I first came across the project of Norwegian singer-songwriter Marie Ulven, known as girl in red, in the later part of last year, shortly after the release of her single “Rue”. Admittedly, I ended up knowing about girl in red, thanks to a friend of mine, but I digress. I just really loved the instantaneous sense of engagement I felt with that single, and I think that was likely down to its highly accessible, yet also very authentic vibe.

Fast-forward to 2021, and the idea…

My first experience listening to Royal Blood, was through their single “Little Monster”, in the lead-up to their debut self-titled album in 2015. In my mind, there was no denying that said album had a monumental impact on modern rock, and it earned its place as one of my favourite albums that the 2010's had to offer.

It was so impressive to see such a rich sound coming from a band that consisted of only two people. However, this set up a worry as well; Royal Blood’s…

It is still weird to think that the seventh studio album from French heavy metal band Gojira would ultimately become one of my most anticipated albums of the year 2021, especially after my fears set up by the release of their single “Another World” in 2020. In a nutshell, that track simply felt like the most typical song that Gojira could’ve put out in my opinion; full of all the expected gojira-ism’s, and not exactly giving any sense of evolution from the band. …

Ending off the month of April, we have an album that I managed to discover just in time, thanks to Spotify’s new releases page. But upon further inspection, I realised that this collaborative project between modern jazz sensations Kaidi Akinnibi and NK-OK, carries some kind of familiarity.

You may recall from my review of Nubiyan Twist’s Freedom Fables, that I was introduced to some of the tracks that teased said album, through Spotify’s Jazztronica playlist. A similar case could definitely be made for this brand new album…

While many fans of the British electro pop trio that Kero Kero Bonito would’ve most likely been introduced to them through the classic, meme-worthy singles of their early days, such as “Flamingo” and “I’d Rather Sleep”, I was a bit more late to the party.

While I at least recognised the aforementioned singles, without actually knowing that they belonged to Kero Kero Bonito, my…

Following what was essentially a week off for me, I was determined to hop back on to reviewing some interesting and awesome projects. And alongside the newest effort from Alfa Mist, the American DJ that is Porter Robinson was next on the agenda.

I had not properly listened to any musical material from Robinson. However, the name did ring a familiar bell. …

First off, I would like to start this review with an apology for my absence. Along with me having a bit of an emotional rollercoaster ride these past few weeks, there hadn’t been many commercial albums that I had really wanted to try and review in recent memory. But with that being said, this Friday brought some interesting projects to my attention, and I am finally ready to keep reviewing once more.

And with that in mind, I felt that there was no better way to continue, than by…

At the summer of 2018, I first discovered New-Zealand R&B artist Jordan Rakei, with his feature on Nightmares On Wax’s track “Typical”. I absolutely love Rakei’s effortlessly soulful vocal style.

I got a much bigger taste of this through Jordan Rakei’s third album, titled Origin; an album that ultimately became one of the highest climbers of 2018 year for me. In other words, Jordan Rakei’s 2018 album really grew on me, and properly cemented me as a fan of Rakei’s music.

Fast forward to…

I recall it being through a Facebook ad, but the 2020 track “Monsterpiece” was how I was first introduced to Alternative DJ and singer Raf Rundell. Eventually, this track became one of the many memorable singles of 2020 for me, with its hazy, sunny, and upbeat energy, that just really projected a feel-good vibe for me.

Fast-forward to this week just gone, and we receive the sophomore album from Raf Rundell, and the first full project I would’ve listened to from the artist, titled O.M. Days. Somehow, someway, the…
