If you’ve been following me for the past few years, you may know that it’s no secret that I find The Alchemist to be one of my favourite hip-hop producers out there, and every collaborative album involving said producer is always a project to look forward to.

And while the presence of one of these collaborative projects seem to be a yearly occurrence, I haven’t found one to review one as of yet. What we got instead, however, is just as exciting.

Last friday saw the re-release of No Idols, a collaborative project between The Alchemist and Domo Genesis, the LA rapper of Odd Future fame.

No Idols originally released in 2012 (so over 10 years ago). With that being said, I wasn’t nearly as clued in on the wider musical spectrum (with the likes of hip-hop particularly being a genre I hadn’t delved into that much at that point), and I hadn’t known of this mixtape’s existence until the re-release that occured this week just gone. But despite this album being over a decade old, I knew I was in for a treat.

No Idols was that and then some! With a handful of what could possibly be some of The Alchemists finest beats to date, this mixtape also came with a highly exciting cast of featured artists (including Tyler, The Creator, Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, Action Bronson, and many more).

With the prospect of summer teasing us ever-so subtly, the kind of vibe that this mixtape gives off feels perfect for that. This is highly in thanks to The Alchemist’s ingenious productions, abundant in unique samples that really gives the mixtape a sonically flavoursome edge.

The bars from Domo Genesis are certainly nothing to scoff at either. While I had only really listened to this artist through a small handful of different features, it was great to listen to the rapper spit bars properly on this mixtape. Not only do the flows meld incredibly well with the diverse range of beats that can be found on No Idols, but Domo effortlessly displays his ethic and personality through his bars.

Despite being a mixtape that came out an age ago, No Idols still manages to feel quite current musically, albeit with that good old nostalgic flavour of the 2010's.

With this mixtape being as enjoyable as it was from start to finish, it did surprise me that I hadn’t known of No Idols until very recently. Nevertheless, I’m certainly glad I had the chance to stumble across it (even if it is a bit of a “better late than never” kind of situation), and I’m sure many who had discovered this mixtape the same way that I did would agree.

My articles mainly revolve around music reviews and analysis. A bit like Anthony Fantano, but just a decade behind.
