Only very recently have I discovered the Philadelphia hardcore outfit known as Jesus Piece, and yet, I was still incredibly excited to listen to their sophomore studio album, titled …So Unknown, upon its release.
After talking myself into giving the band a listen, after enough exposure to them, I was incredibly surprised to witness a level of musical brutality akin to bands like Code Orange and vein.fm.
Giving two of the band’s four teaser tracks from Jesus Piece’s latest album (those being “Tunnel Vision” and “Gates of Horn”) numerous spins, it didn’t take long for me at all to become invested in the band’s explosive sound, with creative instrumentation and mixed vocals (some of which reminded me a little of napalm death).
Fair to say, the album in full was unrelenting in bringing listeners that intense and brutal energy. The entirety of …So Unknown was consistently infernal. And fair to say, I absolutely loved it!
Those of you who know me well know that heavier music was the kind of substance that I would typically lean to, as a lot of angsty teens coming to age in the early 2010’s might have done as well. As I’ve been pacing through adulthood, and especially as I’ve taken the role of the eclectic music reviewer, albums as heavy as …So Unknown tend to pop up in my reviews more rarely than I would hope for. However, this album totally deserves all the attention it gets, for it is a new breed of beast.
This album sticks out in my psyche purely for the fact that it has such an enjoyable brand of hardcore, that champions the dynamic energy that bands like Code Orange and vein.fm trail-blazed. That being said, Jesus Piece are most certainly in the running to be the next great band to hold that baton.
…So Unknown is also one of those albums that I imagine would be an absolute blast to witness live; the same kind of intensity that I’ve witnessed in a live setting from many a hardcore band transpire perfectly onto this album.
In terms of narrative, I loosely picked up on the focus on fighting ones inner demons, which is a pretty tried and tested theme when it comes to albums like these. However, Jesus Piece really do justify these themes on a musical front, as the energy listeners get from …So Unknown is explosive to the point of being oddly motivating.
In short, I will certainly be sure to keep my eyes and ears peeled for the musical future of Jesus Piece, as they pretty much wowed me from the very moment I pressed play on their music. It’s definitely safe to say that in the hardcore sphere, Jesus Piece are a band to look out for, and for those who have been in need of an utterly ballistic energy, loom no further than …So Unknown.
