When generally browsing around for what each person would say their favourite album of 2023 so far was, the answer from most would seemingly be SCARING THE HOES by JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown. And while for me personally, there is a lot of competition for this album to compete with in the musical year of 2023, I can easily see why this appears to be the general consensus.
After all, not only did SCARING THE HOES see the collaboration between two of Hip-Hop’s most experimental talents (an absolute match made in heaven; it should go without saying), but it also brought their uniqueness front and centre with some truly memorable and enjoyable bangers.
My personal gripe with the album at the time was that the production did drown out the vocals quite commonly across the album, though I have managed to see past that a little bit now.

But now, we look forward to the here and now, in which the two eccentric minds of Peggy and Danny collide once more, and the way that they have approached this second helping (quite fittingly) is a more unique approach than most artists out there. Enter; SCARING THE HOES: DLC PACK
Where, with most artists who have extra singles to put out after the release of a larger project, they would simply create a deluxe version of said project and call it a day. However, these two artists had decided to give their little extra helping of whimsical rap goodness its own little bit of the spotlight.
In short, SCARING THE HOES: DLC PACK is both an extension of the preceding album, and its own EP, being a separate entity and a connected one all at once. On the marketing side of things, I feel that it is a pretty ingenious move from these two.
And for those who had listened to the aforementioned full album, but haven’t yet come round to listening to this EP, it is pretty much what you would expect. It is more of the hard-hitting, quirky hip-hop bangers, full to the brim with creativity and energy.
SCARING THE HOES: DLC PACK is a four-track project; so pretty much the industry standard as far as EPs go. Despite that, however, each of the four cuts on here carry their own set of unique qualities, adding tonnes of different contributions to make this EP as much of an all-rounded experience as possible.
The opening track, “Guess What Bitch, We Back Hoe!” is arguably the most accessible sounding of the tracks on here, in the sense that it carries the bare-bones elements of what made the preceding album so enjoyable. And as a result, it felt clear to me that the primary function of this track was to tie the two projects together in a sense.
Following that, we have the soulful and exptic sounding “HERMANOS”, the oddly somber and sobering sound of “Tell Me Where To go”, and finally, the closing track…um…I’ll probably get the amount of NO’s completely wrong in that songs title, but hey, we get a very entertaining flow from Danny Brown towards the end of it.
In short, there’s not an awful lot else to say about this EP, aside from what praise I had already given towards the preceding album. And if you know just how great of a musical project that was, that should speak for how great this EP is in turn.
