When it comes to “guilty pleasure” artists, I feel that none come quite as close to the Jacksonville rap rock band known as Limp Bizkit.
I feel that, at that this point, Limp Bizkit need no introduction. But the reason for their notoriety is somewhat up for debate. I was one of those individuals that had grown up listening to Limp Bizkit, and actually enjoying them. However, combined with the fact that many fans had been waiting on a new album for almost ten whole years, and the band’s style seemingly becoming more and more outdated, they have become a little bit of a meme, as well as a band that many music lovers are far from the biggest fans of.
Those people that believe Limp Bizkit suck, became the inspirational groundwork for their first full album since 2012, released on Halloween. Titled STILL SUCKS, this naming scheme functions as a pairing with the band name, creating “Limp Bizkit Still Sucks” (a supposed phrase passed around by those listeners who hate on the band). But will STILL SUCKS be a trick or a treat? Let me give you my personal answer to that.
As the title suggests, this is clearly the band’s way of poking fun at themselves, while also pulling a complete 180, and letting fans and haters alike that “they dont give a f**k”. And while the premise seems childish on the surface, only a band like Limp Bizkit could pull something like this off.
The arrival of STILL SUCKS was heralded by the very first single by Limp Bizkit in years. Titled “Dad Vibes”, this track was first shown at a live performance back in the summer, along with a very unexpected look from frontman Fred Durst. This song showed that, musically, the band haven’t changed one bit. However, there was an aesthetic sense of the band coming of age, which added a little bit of new flavour to the record to come.
Upon its full release, STILL SUCKS very much retained those qualities. The album genuinely felt like something that could’ve been released in the early 2000’s and no-one would’ve batted an eye. This is, of course, a bit of a double edged sword. It is great to see that Limp Bizkit haven’t compromised their unique musical style in any way. However, the over-familiarity detracts from the overall memorability of the album.
On another note, the album is a little bit stingy, considering that it is the band’s first in almost a decade. Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, STILL SUCKS was just shy of feeling like more of an EP than an album. Nevertheless, it is still a pleasant surprise that the year of 2021 has brought the sound of Limp Bizkit back; it just goes to show how wild this musical year has truly been.
